Climate change is taking a toll on India’s agricultural productivity and farmers’ income. Unprecedented rainfall in Kerala, snowfall in Karnataka and cyclone in Orissa are some of the challenges faced by the farmers in the changing climatic scenario. Kerala witnessed unprecedented rainfall and flood during the year 2018 which has crippled the state’s agricultural production especially in the sector of plantation crops and spices. This rainfall was about 42% above the normal. These changing climatic regimes alter the production environment, wherein the plant is subjected to multiple stresses in the field, such as increased temperature, greater CO2, enhanced UV-B radiation, untimely rainfall and incidence of pest and diseases. All these factors contribute to a reduction in productivity accounting for huge economic losses which calls for immediate attention and intervention from the scientific community. To deal with such situations, a basic understanding of the stress tolerance mechanisms and innovations on mitigation strategies are essential. A brain storming session of research scholars, academicians and industries will help to pool ideas for developing viable management strategies that can serve as contingency packages for farmers and also provide guidelines to policy makers to deal with unforeseen environmental calamities.
In this context, the Department of Plant Physiology, Kerala Agricultural University is privileged to host the National Conference of Plant Physiology-2019 (NCPP-2019) to bring together pioneer scientists, researchers, specialists and students to exchange and share their experiences and research findings on all aspects of plant physiology. It will also provide a premier interdisciplinary platform to present and share their concerns as well as practical challenges encountered in the field and also discuss the most recent innovations to develop climate resilient crops. The conference is being organized from 19th to 21st December, 2019 at College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, under the aegis of the Indian Society of Plant Physiology (ISPP), New Delhi.
